Veľký Kriváň (1 708.7 m a.s.l.) is the highest mountain of the Mala Fatra Mountains. It sits on the main ridge of the Kriváň part of Mala Fatra which bears his name. This meadowy mountain with a peak above the upper limit of mountain pine growth is an excellent scenic points with a panoramic view. It neighbors with the mountains of Pekelník (1,609 m a.s.l.) and Chleb (1 645.6 m a.s.l.) and are separated by two mountain saddles, namely Bublen (1,610 m a.s.l.) and Snilovské saddle (1524 m a.s.l.). The southern, eastern and western slopes are susceptible to avalanches.
The hike to Veľký Kriváň begins at the cottage Vrátna (750 m a.s.l.) where you can get by bus or car and park it in the guarded car park. The first section of the route from the cottage Vrátna leads along the green trail up to the top cableway station. From there follow the blue trail which takes you to the Snilovské saddle (1,524 m a.s.l.). After you have reached it join the red trail and it will guide you to the edge of Veľký Kriváň and eventually to the summit of the mountain. From the summit you can return to the edge following the red signpost and you will get to the saddle Bublen (1150 m a.s.l.). Here turn to join the yellow trail, pass through the mountain saddle Na Koni all the way to Chrapáky (1410 m a.s.l.). From here just walk down the blue hiking trail towards the Kaviarske saddle to the saddle behind Kraviarske, then turn right, follow the green mark which will take you back to the Vrátna valley and finally to the car park by the hotel Vrátna.
