Big Rozsutec (1 609.7 m a.s.l.), a mountain in the Krivánska Mala Fatra, is considered one of the most beautiful in Slovakia. It is situated in the heart of the National Park Malá Fatra and became a symbol of this mountain range. In the past it was rumored to have a gold treasure near the summit stashed by Jánošík himself. Rozsutec dominates the whole area, especially its 160 meter high west flank. It has one of the richest botanic ecosystem in the country. Many endemic species can be found it the area.
A hike to Veľký Rozsutec begins in the village Štefanová where you can get by bus or a car and park it in a guarded car park. The first leg of the route starts in the hamlet of Štefanová and leads along the yellow tourist route to Podžiar. From there follow the blue trail which will take you to the Medzirozsutce saddle. From here just stick with the red mark and it will lead you straight to the summit of Veľký Rozsutec. Be aware that, especially in spring and fall, some stretches around the peak may frost and, as a consequence, the whole route can get really dangerous. To get back just follow the red trail from the summit to the saddle of Medziholie. Here join the green trail which will take you right to the village of Štefanová.
